Position Overview
The Casual Play Café Team Member supports the day-to-day operations of a child-focused café and play environment. The role involves customer service, light food and beverage service, cleaning and sanitization, and monitoring of the play space in accordance with posted rules and internal policies.
This position is not a licensed child care role and does not constitute child care within the meaning of the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014. Children remain under the supervision of their parent or guardian at all times unless participating in a clearly identified, instructor-led program.
 
Core Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Provide courteous, respectful, and inclusive customer service to children, caregivers, and the general public.
  • Operate point-of-sale and payment systems accurately.
  • Support the safe use of the play environment by observing activity, reinforcing posted rules, and escalating concerns in accordance with internal procedures.
  • Perform routine and scheduled cleaning and sanitization tasks in compliance with public health requirements.
  • Assist with basic food and beverage preparation and service, as assigned.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming café and play space.
  • Follow all workplace health and safety policies, procedures, and training.
  • Communicate professionally with co-workers and management.
 
Bona Fide Occupational Requirements
Gross Motor Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to bend, reach, squat, and move throughout the café and play space.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull light to moderate objects (e.g., cleaning supplies, bins, trays).
  • Fine Motor Requirements
  • Ability to safely and effectively:
    • Operate a point-of-sale system and touch screens.
    • Handle food service tools and cleaning equipment.
    • Perform repetitive cleaning and sanitization tasks requiring hand dexterity.
Sensory and Cognitive Requirements
  • Ability to:
    • Remain attentive in a dynamic environment with moderate to loud noise.
    • Observe activity in the play space and identify potential safety concerns.
    • Follow written and verbal instructions.
    • Communicate clearly and calmly with children and adults.

Work Environment 
This position involves indoor work in a family-oriented, public-facing environment, exposure to:
  • moderate to loud noise associated with children’s play.
  • frequent interactions with children, caregivers, and the public, and 
  • routine cleaning and sanitization using approved and appropriately labeled product.

Assets 
  • Previous experience in a café, hospitality, recreation, or child-focused setting.
  • Food Handler Certification (training may be provided where required).

Employment Conditions
  • This is a casual position with no guarantee of minimum hours.
  • Scheduling is based on operational needs.
  • All applicable minimum standards under the Employment Standards Act, 2000 apply, including entitlements related to wages, vacation pay, public holidays, and leaves.
Where applicable to assigned duties, the successful candidate may be required to provide a Vulnerable Sector Check prior to commencement of employment or within a specified onboarding period.
